Autoantibodies in the sicca syndrome (primary Sjögren's syndrome).
IgA and IgM rheumatoid factors as well as antibodies to Ro and La were measured in 37 patients with the sicca syndrome and 9 patients with Sjögren's syndrome secondary to rheumatoid arthritis. Positive results were found in 84% (IgA rheumatoid factor), 76% (IgM rheumatoid factor), 62% (Ro), and 50% (La) of patients with the sicca syndrome. There was no significant difference in the frequency of...
متن کاملThe sicca syndrome in thalassaemia major.
A 20 year old man with beta thalassaemia developed symptoms of the sicca syndrome. His serum contained rheumatoid factor and antinuclear antibodies. A biopsy specimen of labial salivary gland showed large accumulations of haemosiderin within the parenchymal cells of the acini. Although in this case the sicca syndrome could not be definitely distinguished from Sjögren's syndrome, the patient's H...
متن کاملPeripheral neuropathy associated with the sicca syndrome.
Three patients with the sicca syndrome and chronic sensory neuropathy are described; in two of them neuropathy was the presenting feature of the disease. The sicca syndrome can give rise to a characteristic neurological syndrome comprising areflexia and asymmetrical sensory loss, particularly of proprioception, in the limbs. This is often associated with tonic pupils and trigeminal anaesthesia.
متن کاملHL-A antigens and the sicca syndrome.
The recent interest in the HL-A typing as applied to the rheumatic diseases (Brewerton, Caffrey, Hart, James, Nicholls, and Sturrock, 1973; Schlosstein, Terasaki, Bluestone, and Pearson, 1973) has prompted us to investigate the possible association of an HL-A antigen in patients with the 'sicca syndrome', viz. keratoconjunctivitis sicca and xerostomia. Birch, Bunim, and Bloch (1963) in a clinic...
متن کاملAn unexpected discovery complicating sicca syndrome.
During a routine check-up, retro-pneumoperitoneum was discovered on the lowest slices of a computed tomography (CT) chest scan in a 77-year-old female patient who was known to have Sjögren’s syndrome with lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia (fig. 1a). She had initially been treated with prednisolone that improved sicca signs and cough. The patient, who had no prior history of digestive problems,...
